Created in 1999, the Foundation for sustainable development of mountain regions (FDDM) is the structure to promote sustainable development in the Canton of Valais and in the mountain regions of the world. The core of its activity consists of coordinating and implementing projects of sustainable development, such as the regional Agenda 2030, the realisation of events, education and international cooperation projects.

FDDM is SMArt creator and coordinator. It assumes the financial, administrative and operational functioning of the programme, as well as the coordination between the different partners in Switzerland and over the world.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) is the agency for international cooperation of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA). The SDC is responsible for the overall coordination with other federal authorities of development and cooperation with Eastern Europe as well as for humanitarian aid delivered by the Swiss Confederation.

Swiss international cooperation, which is an integral part of the Federal Council’s foreign policy, aims to contribute to a world without poverty and in peace, for sustainable development. It fosters economic self-reliance and state autonomy, contributes to the improvement of production conditions, helps address environmental problems, and ensures better access to education and basic healthcare services.

The Culture Service implements the Canton Valais cultural policy, which aims to promote a lively and diversified culture as a factor of individual and collective development. Its field of action concerns the creation, animation, dissemination and cultural training as well as the protection and development of cultural assets.

Within this framework, the Canton Valais contributes primarily to artistic creation, as well as to the protection of the cultural heritage and to the knowledge of the latter by a wide public. In addition, it provides framework conditions that promote access to culture for everyone, in particular through its cultural institutions, archives, media libraries and museums, as well as through the support it gives to communal and school libraries.

Crochetan is the Theater of the city of Monthey. Since its opening in 1989, Crochetan Theater has been part of the network of national and international tours of quality shows in all areas of the performing arts, but it is also strongly committed to regional artists.

Within SMArt programme, Crochetan Theater is a cultural partner, which provides a residency to the photographers. The residence consist in an individual flat in the small castle of Monthey.

Fondation Château Mercier

Château Mercier is a unique place ideally located in the heights of Sierre, which was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Since 1992, a foundation manages the place and aims to turn the Château into a cultural centre and meeting place. The Villa Ruffieux is part of the Château Mercier estate. In 1992, the house was turned into an artists’ residence in close collaboration with the Canton of Valais and the city of Sierre.

Within SMArt programme, Fondation Château Mercier is a cultural partner, which provides a residency to the photographers (Villa Ruffieux). The residence offers individual rooms in a vast house where the common areas (kitchen, living room, etc.) are shared.

Artbellwald.ch is an association in Bellwald, a mountain village which lies in the Goms Valley, in the upper Rhone Valley. The association artbellwald.ch invites artists from home and abroad to come and work in the fields of painting, sculpture, film and video art, literature, composition, architecture, industrial or fashion design, for between 2 and 6 months.

Within SMArt programme, artbellwald.ch is a cultural partner, which provides a residency to the photographers and provides them with a suitable studio in a converted old barn as well as a furnished studio.

Located in the Italian speaking part of Switzerland, the main activities of Verzasca Foto Festival take place in Sonogno in the Verzasca Valley. Riverbero is a non-profit organization that aims to bring high-quality contemporary art in all its forms to the Poschiavo Valley. Such projects are usually only found in urban centres and rarely, if ever, find their way to remote venues. The aim of the association is not only to expand the range of local offerings, but also to connect the geographical periphery with Swiss cultural centres and other different regions.

Situated in Beijing, Three Shadows Photography Art Centre is China’s first independent organization specializing in contemporary art photography since its founding by the influential Chinese contemporary photographer RongRong and his wife, the famous Japanese photographer inri.
